My name is Jenny Rivera and I'll be singing Sister Sharon Falconer in both Nashville and Montclair. This is the first time I've ever written a blog of any kind, but I feel like if Sharon were around, or Amy Semple, the character on which Sharon was based, she would be a master of the blogosphere since she had pretty much conquered the media as it existed at that time. I am excited to be a part of this project for so many reasons.....
and sometimes I have to pinch myself to make sure I really got lucky enough to get to "create" this incredibly unusual and complex character. Not only is it my first time blogging, but "Elmer" will mark my first time singing in a World Premiere, which of course is really exciting. But even more than that, I have grown to love and admire Bob and Herschel and really couldn't imagine finding people whose music and story I would rather bring to full life on the stage. I'm also going to have fun singing with my buddy Keith Phares, who has been a very close friend for many years, but this will mark our first time playing opposite each other. Hopefully by the time we open we'll have stopped laughing at each other during our love scenes! I may not be a particularly religious person, but I have complete faith in the power of music to heal and change people, and I have particular faith in the power of this opera to do what music intrinsically should do - to move people and make them feel something. And it doesn't hurt that they'll walk out of the theater whistling some wonderfully fantastic tunes!
